How Bitwage Uses PIX
PIX launched in November 2020 and has become Brazil's dominant payment rail within 3 years — processing over 150M users and averaging 150M+ transactions per day. For Bitwage, PIX replaced SWIFT wires as the standard rail for BRL payments to Brazilian contractors.
When a Bitwage client sends a payment to a Brazilian contractor, Bitwage converts USD to BRL at the locked FX rate and routes to the contractor's PIX key (CPF/CNPJ, phone number, email, or random PIX key). The contractor receives BRL in their bank account within 10 seconds, 24/7 — including weekends and Brazilian holidays.
The PIX ecosystem covers virtually all Brazilian banks, fintechs, and digital wallets (Nubank, Itaú, Bradesco, Inter, PicPay, and 700+ others). Coverage is effectively universal for adult Brazilians with any banking relationship. Bitwage uses PIX for individual contractor payments up to BRL 500,000 per transaction.
PIX vs SWIFT
SWIFT wires to Brazil cost $40–$60 and take 2–5 business days, arriving in a Brazilian bank account where the recipient must wait for the bank to process the inbound international transfer — often adding another day. PIX delivers BRL in 10 seconds at no interbank fee. For any USD-to-BRL contractor payment, PIX is definitively faster, cheaper, and more reliable than SWIFT.

Common questions about Brazil Instant Payment System and how Bitwage uses it.
Bitwage converts your USD to BRL at the locked rate and routes via PIX payment using the contractor's PIX key (CPF, phone, or email). The contractor receives BRL in their Brazilian bank account within 10 seconds. See the brazil guide.
A PIX key is an alias for a Brazilian bank account — it can be the contractor's CPF (national ID), CNPJ (business ID), phone number, email, or a random alphanumeric key. The contractor shares their preferred PIX key during Bitwage onboarding.
PIX payment operates 24/7/365, including weekends, Carnaval, and all Brazilian holidays. There are no cut-off times for business-to-individual PIX transfers during daytime hours.
During business hours, individual PIX transactions can be up to BRL 500,000. At night (8pm–6am), individual-to-individual transfers are limited to BRL 1,000 by default. Business payments have separate limits set per institution. For large contractor payments, multiple transactions or daytime scheduling handles the limit.
