Webhook

A webhook is an HTTP callback that sends real-time notifications to a specified URL when a specific event occurs in an application — enabling instant integration between systems.

Webhooks (also called "reverse APIs") allow systems to push data to another application the moment an event occurs, rather than requiring the receiving system to poll repeatedly. When an event fires (e.g., "payment_settled"), the source system sends an HTTP POST request to a pre-configured URL with event data as JSON payload.

For payment platforms, webhooks are critical for real-time reconciliation: when Bitwage confirms a payment has settled, a webhook fires to update the payer's ERP (NetSuite, QuickBooks) or HRIS (Workday, ADP) immediately — no manual checking required. Webhooks eliminate polling delays and reduce the engineering overhead of building payment status integrations. Bitwage's API exposes webhook events for payment initiation, settlement confirmation, rejection, and KYC status changes.
